Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT4 KIRKLEY (Unknown3, JAMES KIRKLEY2 SR., JOHN1 KIRKLEY) was born March 22, 1838 in Kershaw County, South Carolina, and died March 14, 1926 in Austin, Travis County, Texas1. He married (1) "MARY ANN" BROWN Abt. 1866 in South Carolina, daughter of PHILIP BROWN and MARY OSTEEN. She was born June 19, 1842 in Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina, and died January 02, 1904 in Cushing, Nacogdoches County, Texas2. He married (2) OLEVIA DURRETT3 1906 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas, daughter of ALBERT DURRETT and HARRIETT FULLER. She was born July 10, 1864 in Texas, and died May 21, 1916 in Cushing, Nacogdoches, Texas. He married (3) NELLIE WOMBLE BOWLING after 1918. She was born 1845 in Fayette County, Tennessee, and died October 5, 1924 in Dallas County, Texas.4.

Notes for ROBERT KIRKLEY:

Robert's date of birth is recorded anywhere from 1836 (headstone at Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Tex.) to 1840 (a History of the 2nd. South Carolina Infantry 1861-1865, by Wyckoff).

Robert enlisted in Camden, South Carolina on April 9, 1861. His records state he was a mechanic in Camden at the time. Was discharged October 19, 1861 because of disability. Reinlisted March 5, 1862. Furloughed October 1, 1862 for 30 days. Sick on November 1, 1862. Returned February 23, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg. Sent to Ft. Delaware Prison, Delaware between July 7 and July 12, 1863. Not released until June 10, 1865. He was 5 ft. 7 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. From "A History of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry: 1861 - 1865" by Mac Wyckoff.

Upon release from Ft. Delaware, P.O.W.s were taken by ship to Philadephia, then put on trains or larger ships and released at nearest point to their home and that could have been Charleston, S.C. for Robert. When he returned to South Carolina, he married Mary Ann Brown and fathered five children in Sumter County, S. C. The entire family moved to Marlin, Texas about 1877 and a sixth child was born Sept. 15, 1884 in Marlin. Later the family moved to Cushing, Nacogdoches County, Texas and lived on Eucalyptus Street. Robert worked at saw mills in the area. Mary Ann died Jan. 2, 1904 and was buried in the Cushing Cemetery. Her gravestone is hardly readable (in the 1990s) and has been damaged and should be replaced.

Robert remarried in 1906 to a lady named Olevia Durrett Houston Shaver Bartlow Truce. A son, Ralph, was born to them in Oct. 1907. Olevia was 43 at the time and Robert was 69 years old. Olevia died suddenly in May, 1916, leaving 9 1/2 year old Ralph to be raised by his father. She was buried in the Cushing Cemetery and her tombstone bore the name Olevia Durrett Bartlow, not Kirkley. Olevia's daughter by Shaver did not want Kirkley on the gravestone and since she was responsible for choosing the stone, she used her Mother's second married name. But years later, Ralph or R.L. as he became known, had the gravestone replaced with the Kirkley last name.

When Robert became unable to care for himself, he resided at the Confederate Men's Home in Austin.(See ALBUM Link).Robert died March 14, 1926 at age 90 and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Soldier's Field, among the honored soldiers of the Civil War, in section One, Row R, space 37. (this was changed from Section

F, Row Q, space 37 in 1997 by the Cemetery).

From records at the Texas State Archives, his religious persuasion was Methodist. In case of his death, Mrs. Nellie Kirkley, wife of Carrolton, Texas was to be notified. Robert married Nellie Womble Bowling Glaze about 1919 and they lived in Cushing, Texas until Robert entered the Confederate Men's Home in Austin. Nellie died in 1924, about two years before Robert.

From application for Civil War Pension, Robert's land and personal property was valued at $200.00 (yes, two hundred!) in August, 1909. The tax on the Cushing , Texas property on Eucalyptus St. and 5th St. (block 50, lot 1.2) was $1.48 in 1913. That is hard to comprehend but it was way before inflation
